Hello Everyone! Sorry I haven’t been posting much lately! Life has been busy! I wanted to share with all of you a quick and easy recipe to make your own all-natural Bio-Oil. I am heading south again and am trying to do as much research as I can on PMLE. What is PMLE? Well, it’s Polymorphous light eruption – which is one of the most common forms of sun allergies. And guess who suffers from it? Yup – ME! I discovered this years ago on my first trip to the Dominican. Every day by 2 pm I was in my hotel room with wet cool towels on my arms, belly, and thighs. It’s a bumpy rash that develops and trust me when I say it’s not fun! I experienced a bit of it in Mexico but that was in November and the sun is much hotter in Dominican.
I have been reading lots and found that if you increase your intake of antioxidants, keep skin super moisturized with Bio-Oil, use this AGR + E lotion, and of course, use sun screen then the chances are reduced that I will get the rash. I used Bio-Oil years ago when I was pregnant as someone told me about it. I thought since it had the word Bio in it that it would be more natural. NOPE!!!! So I jumped on this great website: Environmental Working Group – Skin Deep and typed in Bio-Oil. EWG ranks their products on a scale of 1-10. 1 being low hazard to your health and 10 being high hazard to your health. This is what Bio-Oil ranked:
I was relatively surprised! So then I googled the ingredients to see if I could recreate it. This is what I found from this website. Can you even pronounc
Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract (Calendula Oil)
Lavandula Angustifolia Oil (Lavender Oil)
Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil (Rosemary Oil)
Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil (Chamomile Oil)
Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A)
Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)
Glycine Soja Oil
Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil
Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde
Orange: CI 26100 (Red 17)
After seeing the main ingredients (calendula, Lavender essential oil, Rosemary essential oil, Chamomile essential oil, vitamin A, vitamin E) I knew I could recreate this. But then I noticed that the Vitamin A was the worst ingredient on the list from the EWG so I researched why Vitamin A would be hazardous. It turns out that the Vitamin A that Bio-Oil uses is synthetic (meaning man made from many chemicals and components) and can cause changes to the biochemical and cellular levels in our bodies. Then I found that beta-carotene is the best form of Vitamin A for anti-oxidants. However, unless you want to look like a carrot, DO NOT apply to your skin – YOU WILL TURN ORANGE! I actually made my first video with the beta-carotene capsules and what a mess! I have decided to simply take it internally as recommended on the bottle. You could use the Vitamin A that is from fish liver oil on your skin and that would be a good alternative.
Here is my recipe:
- amber bottle (I used a 100 ml bottle)
- 1/3 jojoba oil (great moisturizer, does not clog pores) buy at local grocery store, health food store or here.
- 1/3 fractionated coconut oil (the one that is liquid at room temp – is not greasy, does not clog pores) buy at local grocery store, health food store or here.
- 1/3 calendula oil (high in antioxidants, extremely healing to the skin) buy at health food stores or here
- 5 Vitamin E capsules (buy here)
- 3 drops Lavender essential oils (buy here)
- 3 drops Rosemary essential oils (extremely high in antioxidants) (buy here)
- 1 drop German Chamomile (soothing to the skin) (buy here)
- Place jojoba, coconut and calendula oil in bottle
- Cut open and squeeze Vitamin E capsules into bottle
- Add your essential oils
- Moisturize and Enjoy!
Here is my video on how to make it!

As always, please be cautious with the essential oils you use. Not all are made equally and some are NOT intended for topical use. You must be careful with exposing your skin to low quality essential oils as your skin absorbs the oils very quickly. I ONLY use Young Living Essential Oils and are the only oils I trust for my family and myself. To read more about Young Living Essential Oils please click here.
